I have been given the opportunity to work on quite a few bulls at different ages and for different reasons. Generally we do adjustments in a chute and they seem to react pretty well to it once they settle down. Listed below are some common indications that your cattle need a chiropractor.
In bulls of all ages one of the easiest things to look for is bulging areas along the spine. Often (likely because of the size of the vertebrae) when a bull is misaligned in his back it creates an unsightly humped area - most often seen along the lumbar but sometimes in the ribs as well. Because this effects the appearance of your animal they may not do as well at sale.
Along those same lines if your bull has shoulders and femurs out, or a pelvis rotation/pronation it greatly affects his gaits which in turn will make an impact on the price you can get for him since he won't show as well. Some things to look for when he is moving are: an uneven stride, slamming or stamping hooves into the ground more then normal, legs swinging or turning outward more then normal, dragging hooves, short striding, a tail held consistently off center, and other gait changes. Misalignment generally won't make your bull be fully lame or have a big limp- but it will definitely affect his movement and attitude negatively.
In older bulls that are a part of a breeding program- indications of misalignment include: a loss of vitality, a loss of energy and willingness to breed, less then normal bellering, gait changes, weightloss, and general listlessness. I have had great success with bulls displaying the above symptoms making a full comeback. After an adjustment they typically make a 180° and gain the weight and energy back! Chiropractic care can greatly increase the longevity of your bulls usefulness and overall well-being.
My clients tell me the money they've spent on chiropractic care for their bulls absolutely pays for itself at the sale and in the pasture.
These are just a few of the reasons you should consider chiropractic as an essential tool for your cattle operation or for your 4-H steers, the results will speak for themselves.
